Why I wanted to be a blacksmith
I originally began forging when i was 15 I was self taught and and did blacksmithing as a hobby through secondary school and university. I was unhappy with traditional education and i wanted to work using both my mind and my body. I saw blacksmithing as the perfect occupation and I’ve been striving to make a living with the craft ever since i left university.
Respect
It all starts with respect, in our modern world we have less respect for our history and our built environment. Our society puts an emphasis on speed and convenience and in my belief that is a detriment to our traditional architecture and even the products we buy. My hope by working with traditional blacksmithing techniques the work I produce will last lifetimes. That is respect to the person that buys my products and to the the buildings my larger work goes on.

Scale model plow forged from old horseshoes and agricultural equipment in 2025
I grew up on a small Cattle farm in county Clare. My family has been working this land for over 200 years. I am just the current steward of the land. I operate my forge on the farm out of an old converted cattle shed. I still farm cattle with a preference for limousine and irish shorthorn breeds. I think growing up in this agricultural environment has shaped my forgework. Having seen the traditional forged gates and machinery all around me has definitely influenced what I create today
